You can receive a tax credit for ENERGY STAR® qualified windows and doors you purchased and installed during 2017. Under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 which was signed in February 2018, a number of tax credits for residential energy efficiency that had expired at the end of 2016 were renewed and the window and door tax credit was included.
Which windows and doors are eligible for the energy tax credit?
All replacement windows and doors that meet ENERGY STAR criteria are eligible. Even if you only replaced a couple of windows or doors in your home or installed a new window where there wasn’t one before you can qualify for the tax credit.
How much is the Energy Tax Credit?
10% of the window and door cost, up to $500, but windows alone are capped at $200. The tax credit does not include installation costs.
How to apply for the Energy Tax Credit?
To receive your tax credit, file the IRS Tax Form 5695 and submit it with your taxes.
Keep your sales receipts and the Great Lakes Window Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for your records.
Taxpayers must keep a copy of the certification statement for their records, but do not have to submit a copy with their tax return.
