How Much is the 2023 Energy Tax Credit?

As part of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, annual federal tax credits of up to $1200 are available for energy-efficient home envelope improvements ($1100 for qualifying windows and doors) purchased and installed between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2032.

Window Tax Credit Amount

  • Claim 30% of the project cost, up to $600 maximum.
  • Windows must meet ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certification.
  • Maximum annual amount with no lifetime limit.

Patio Door Tax Credit Amount

  • You can claim 30% of the project cost, up to $500 ($250 per door).
  • Doors must meet ENERGY STAR requirements for your climate zone.
  • Maximum annual amount with no lifetime limit.

Who Can Use the Energy Tax Credit?

Homeowners that complete qualified energy-efficient improvements to their principal residence, including a renovation or addition to their existing home. The home must be in the United States and can include a house, houseboat, mobile home, cooperative apartment, condominium, and manufactured home. New construction homes and rentals are not eligible. 

Annual Energy Tax Credit Limits

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit has no lifetime limitation. The annual maximum allows $1,200 in tax credits for all qualifying building envelope components—$1100 for windows and doors. How to qualify for the energy tax credit.*

  • Purchase and install ENERGY STAR Most Efficient certified Great Lakes Window windows or ENERGY STAR certified Great Lakes Window patio doors between January 1, 2023, and December 31, 2032.
  • Save your purchase documentation, including your sales receipt, a copy of the Great Lakes Window Manufacturer’s Certification Statement and NFRC Ratings/ENERGY STAR product performance verification. The window/door NFRC Ratings and ENERGY STAR qualification information is printed on the Great Lakes Window NFRC Label adhered to your window/door.
  • Finally, claim the credit when you file your taxes for the applicable tax year.

It’s important to download and retain the Great Lakes Window Manufacturer’s Certification Statement as well as the purchase receipt and NFRC label for each eligible window and door, as it may be requested by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
