There’s no better time to spruce up your outdoor living space than in the summer. At this point, you have hosed down the deck or patio, dragged out your furniture and picked those pesky weeds that popped up in the spring. It’s a great time to take stock of what you have and determine whether or not it’s time to make some improvements, or at least add on some fun new features. Here are 5 ways to enhance your patio this summer.
Easy. Affordable. Add some cool potted plants around your patio. Play around with varying heights, sizes and types, including trees, flowers and shrubs. A small pot of lavender on the table looks beautiful and adds an inviting scent. A lemon tree is a cool option that also provides fruit. Various flowers in an array of colors will always liven up a space. Just keep in mind your climate and the amount of sunlight that hits your patio. If it sees a lot direct sunlight, shade-seeking plants probably won’t thrive, and plants that require ample sun won’t blossom in a shaded backyard. If you want to get really creative, look into plants that attract butterflies and hummingbirds like lilies, cardinal flowers, geraniums and impatiens. (Find a comprehensive list, here.) You’ll get an added bonus of attractive wildlife in addition to your pretty flowers.
Water features can range from very simple to extremely elaborate. A simple fountain requires nothing more than filling it with water and a power source, some of which are even solar powered. They can be small enough to rest on a table top, or slightly larger and stand on their own. A small water basin and waterfall add a little extra visual oomph while also providing the soothing sound of a babbling brook. If you are feeling extra ambitious, consider building a backyard water garden.
Upgraded patio door
Think about how often you use your patio door to step outside. If it has seen better days, it might be time for an upgrade. You’ll want to look for energy efficient patio doors that are weather resistant and glide open and closed smoothly and easily. Good lock features for added safety are important as well. Great Lakes Window provides patio doors in custom sizes, 4 interior wood grain finishes, various exterior paint colors, hardware options and more. With customizable options you can get a patio door installed that blends seamlessly into the interior and exterior of your home.
Now that you have pulled out your existing furniture and cleaned everything off, you might realize that it is either broken, worn down or just not your style any more. Or, maybe you haven’t invested in any at all yet! Having some comfy furniture on your patio is perfect for summer BBQs and gatherings. Look for options that are weather-resistant and light enough to move into the garage or a shed during the colder months, or purchase in a good furniture cover to avoid rusting.
Probably the easiest and most affordable upgrade option are the smaller accents that can really elevate your space. Consider lighting for evening gatherings, such as lanterns, string lights or runner lights that illuminate pathways. Here are several creative lighting ideas from Martha Stewart. Also, think about colorful design elements such as throw pillows, outdoor rugs, tablecloths and cushions. These can be found in punchy, bright colors that will add some fun to your space.
Now that your outdoor space has been made even more inviting with water features, plants, comfy furniture with colorful accents and a sleek new patio door; fire up the grill and invite friends and family over to enjoy the beautiful space you worked so hard to create!
